TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN CANADA
'Twas the night before Christmas and
all through the yard
The branches were bare and the ground frozen hard.
The roses were dormant and mulched all around
To protect them from damage in case frost heaves the ground.
The perennials nestled all snug in
their beds,
While visions of 5-10-10 danced in their heads.
Prize shrubs were protected and with burlap enclosed
To reduce possible injury from the long winter's doze.
When what to my wondering eye should
appear
But a sleigh full of gifts of gardening gear.
Saint Nick was the driver -- the jolly ol' elf,
And he winked as he said, "I'm a gardener myself.
For those who would scowl at the
sight of a hoe,
I've brought a rotary tiller to end their woe.
Here are hybrid tea roses that look really great,
Just put them right next to the garden gate.
I've brought wilt-pruf and growth
regulators too.
Father can try them and see what they do.
To eliminate weeding, here is lots of herbicide,
And to battle the bugs, some new insecticide.
With these pretty flagstones, lay a
garden path.
For the kids to enjoy -- a bird feeder and bath.
To please the feminine gardener, the gadgets she loves
Plant stakes, knee pads, and waterproof gloves.
To those who'll seed a new lawn, I've
a patented sower
And since the grass will grow here's a new power mower.
For seed planting days, I've a trowel and a dibble,
And a roll of wire mesh if the rabbits should nibble.
To enrich the soil, these plans for a
compost pit.
For enjoying the flowers, an arrangement kit.
And last, but of importance, some dehydrated manure,
A green Christmas year 'round, these gifts will insure."
Then jolly Saint Nick having emptied
his load,
Shouted to his reindeer and took to the road.
And I heard him exclaim above the sleigh bells hum,
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a green thumb!!"
